Characters of La Cruz; Andrea Kuffner of the Black Forest restaurant. Experiencing Germany in a quaint Mexican village. Four Canadians from opposite sides of the country, one couple visiting, the other lives here, dining at a German restaurant in a quaint Mexican town listening to flamenco music performed by a German who lives in Mexico and a Mexican who lives in the USA… yes, that’s a typical night in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle at the Black Forest Restaurant. What makes it typical; People from all over the world. Music… always music in our little town and; Food: Chef Winfried always [...]

Characters: TATEWARI

Characters: Esau, Mimi and Daniel = TATEWARI banda Anyone who’s spent any time at all in La Cruz will have had their senses delighted by band, Tatewari! I adore their music and moreso enjoy the interaction between them. Mimi (who’s real name is Al) is the funny one, I giggle as he tries to get Daniel and Esau to smile throughout the performance. Those of us who’ve seen them grow up playing music and have cheered them on have seen them evolve into not only great musicians but phenomenal young men! Living a few doors from each other the three [...]

Characters; Jorge of Tacos on the Street.

Tacos on the Street; an interview with Jorge Diaz Gómez Finding excellent food certainly appeals to the foodie in me; the story behind the ‘place’ fills my appetite almost as much as the food! At the time of this writing (April, 2015) I’ve been living in La Cruz for 6 years and was pretty sure I knew all there was to know about Tacos on the Street or TOTS as some call it. Waiting in line I boldly shared ‘their story’ with friends when someone came up beside me, crossed her arms and leaned in… “Keep going, I love hearing [...]

Shrimp Mango Avocado Ceviche

Shrimp Mango Avocado Ceviche When we first began our journey in the area we never imagining that we'd move here and purchase a run down building, renovate it and turn it into a Boutique Hotel! The fabulous food was something I never had to imagine I just dove in and enjoyed. Yumm, yumm!  I have a habit, when I truly like a food, I do my best to replicate the recipe. We had something similar to this dip when we were out and about... I quickly decided I had to recreate it! The combination of flavours excited my taste-buds and [...]

Cocktail hour – Avocado Margarita

Avocados are healthy and they are abundant in Mexico. I enjoy at least half an avocado per day. I was delighted when my niece, Courtney, was visiting and she suggested we make Avocado Margaritas. I squinched up my nose not thinking that was an ideal combination. She said “They’re really good”! So, I made them for all of our guests and they raved about both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions. Creamy, smooth and yummy!  Avocado Margarita (inspired by and recipe from Fernando’s Pub in Kelowna) 1 oz lime juice 1 oz simple syrup ( 2 parts sugar, 1 part [...]
